I lived alone for 20 years and I love it. While a self defense class is something to look into, I have never taken a class in it and I really don't see it as being necessary unless you are planning to travel alone.

Anyway... the biggest thing to living safely alone is to make sure that you live in a good neighborhood (low crime) and that you get to know your neighbors.

Also... wherever you go... grocery shopping, etc. always carry your cellphone. Most likely you will never need it to call the police, but it does come in handy if your car breaks down or if you get lost trying to someplace (mapquest and others are not always the best at giving directions).
