Oh my....that smell of smoke definitely puts on the vigilance. Was in the new barn where we have the pregnant mares last night & temps were nice so barn was all open. I smelled smoke & the first thing I did was try to figure out where it was coming from also. Though I know we are expecting rain this weekend & no wind last night....people were trying to get their burn piles burnt before the rain. Know the farm has their burn pile in a back field where I can see it & my neighbor was talking about doing his burn pile too. I hate not knowing where it is actually coming from though & just the smell of smoke triggers awareness.
Ugh, a few years ago not long after moving here, I was driving home from my neighboring friend's farm. Saw flames going into the sky right by my farm. First thing I thought was "MY HOUSE" until I got closer & saw it was a huge burn pile in the field on the property next to mine. I WILL NEVER get used to burn piles or the smell of smoke
