There was another lesbian movie that came out a few years later- Clare of the Moon - and it was truly awful -awful acting awful writing and everyone leaving the theatre wanted or did light a cigarette as we left -they smoked a lot in the movie -but we were young and it was so refreshing to see girl gets girl and again doesn't end up with a man at the end (all those 50's pulp novels - see Beebo Brinker for example. Then there were the adverb laden Katherine V. Forrest novels - for example Curious Wine but girl got girl there as well)
