Well... this was kind of you. But, of course, these days (at least where I live) it could well have turned out differently. It's become a much more potentially dangerous world nowadays than it was for most of my life. (And I've been around for a while!)
You mentioned this was on a highway. I know, where I live (which is a major metropolitan area) it is typically recommended that people not stop on a highway to help someone due to the potential for it to cause accidents. In recent years, a number of good samaritans have been hit by other cars speeding past. It is generally recommended that, rather than stop, a person call (if they can) 911 and report the problem so that appropriate emergency vehicles can be dispatched to provide assistance. However, from what you wrote, it sounds as though you were perhaps out in a rural area? So, under those circumstances, what is typically recommended where I live may not apply.
