I had an incredibly depressing experience today.
I had to go do a couple loads of laundry, and I had to break a 10. Convenience store and laundromat are across the parking lot from each other. So I went and bought a granola bar to break the 10.
The (very cute, VERY young, like, this-is-my-very-first-job young) girl at the register gave me change for a 20, which I didn't realize till I went to put it in my pocket. So I stuck my head around the register, in front of the person being helped (sorry, rude, didn't want to wait, though ;-)) and said "I only gave you a 10," and handed her back the extra change.
She was very appreciative, but there were AUDIBLE "wows" in the very long line behind me, and one woman said, "That was really nice."
GEEEZE. Are honesty and integrity that unexpected anymore?? Sure, I could use an extra $10, but I also have to live with myself.
How fricking depressing that something that should be automatic gets so widely applauded instead.
