This implies that we know in advance what people will say/do, either online or in real life. I don't think anyone wants to "let" people hurt them but how do you know what people are really like, their true colors? 
It's when you confide in them or you're vulnerable you find out. And all we can do is try to heal the best we can and watch out for those "red flags" in the future.
