Tomorrow begins the 2 days of Dia de los Muertos, which is actually a more spiritual holiday than Halloween is (although Samhain is spiritually based). Dia is not "scary" like the stupid news reports.
I don't know if other places in the U.S. (except Texas because of the large Mexican population) celebrate Day of the Dead like we do here (also a large Mexican population).
Every alter is different, but all include examples of the elements (fire [candles], water., etc.). All have food offerings, marigolds, and monarch butterflies. Skeletons dancing, sugar skulls. Most have religious symbols and all have pics of deceased loved ones. The alters are very bright and VERY colorful. Some small alters are placed on the grave sites of loved ones along with examples of items that person may have liked, or that represent that person ( a woman who liked to sew...some fabric with needle and thread, for example).
Many families sit in the cemetery all night, have a picnic with candles lit, and celebrate the life of their loved one(s). It is quite something to see after dark!
