As a woman who also has thick, curly hair - I understand the dilemma. Why aren't stylists more well-trained? There's a shop in a town near mine that claims to specialize in cutting/styling curly hair. One of these days, when I happen to have $75 (plus a 25% tip) I'll give them a try. The situation does get very tiresome. I like my hair, too, and I'm weary of having it slaughtered.
For seven years I lived in a neighborhood in which I was the only white person. All of my neighbors were black. The women (and men) went to shops that were black-owned with appropriately trained stylists. Also, because many blacks have hair that is very delicate and breaks off, especially as they age, the women wear wigs.
