Giving them some money instead to help with the move instead of Christmas presents sounds like a nice gesture. However, I wouldn't go beyond that as far as financial assistance.

So many places around the world are having housing affordability issues these days. They are going to have to be realistic and consider some trade-offs like Divine said. Most people have to these days unless they are wealthy. As you said, they should prioritize having a roof over their head even if it doesn't meet everything on their wishlist.

I have a friend like that. She and her husband had a down payment and mortgage approval for a house. However, she decided that they could only live in one municipality of the capital city (which has 32 municipalities). Moving a bit further out of the city, which a lot of people, including myself had done was not an option either to her. She would not budge and eventually the mortgage approval expired because there was nothing she could afford in that area. Now they are stuck renting and purchase prices are completely out of their price range. They also risk their lease not being renewed because the landlord wants to fix the place up and charge more. The Covid rental protections have expired. That is all the result of refusing to compromise and consider any other options but one.

Hopefully, they will be able to find a way to be more flexible and find something they can afford, even if it is not perfect.
Thanks for this!
