The town in which I live hasn't had a holiday parade for 2 years due to covid. This year the town was supposed to hold a huge parade not in the morning, but to go all out at 4 p.m., a big light show with the floats decorated, colorful lights, the whole 9 yards. Tons of money dumped into the festivities, support small business people!- you name it.

I've been proud of it all. Go town! I decided I wasn't going to attend, although I live close enough to Main Street that I can stand in a certain place and see a bit of what's happening there. Still, I've felt proud of the town doing something so special and I was excited for the people, especially kids, who would enjoy the parade.

So this morning I awoke, got online, and the morning news: Holiday Parade Cancelled Due to Rain.

I thought it was a joke. Oh, you silly town council! But, no. Fabulous electric festival parade cancelled due to rain. Due to RAIN!

Okay. It rained and was gusty overnight. The rain is winding down, by tonight "showers" are predicted The wind has stopped - hours ago. I'm actually embarrassed to say this, but- right now the sky is bright and sunny, at this moment, anyway.

I can imagine it: 4 p.m. rolls around. The rain is long gone, wind is a memory. The sun is out as dusk falls. No parade. Children all over town hysterically sobbing because...no parade. Frustrated parents, because...no parade.
Hi! It's the holiday season and it's winter! There may be a bit of showers - umbrellas, anyone?
Welcome to the genuinely laughable side of California This is why my dad's family who, when they came out here from NYC to visit, laughed at us. "A little rain," they'd say, "and everyone panics."

I called David, expecting him to say WHAT?! They CANCELLED it?! No. David, all family from California, going back 1,000 years, apparently fear-ers of rain, calmly stated, "Oh, yes, I think they did the right thing." Breathe. Just breathe.

In over 100 years do you know how many times the NYC Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was cancelled? ONCE. Do you know why? It was cancelled at the start of WWII because the rubber for the balloons was needed for the war effort.
