I know, I know. Lest anyone think I'm hideous, I'll explain. No, I do not disrespect the dead. The two unfortunate folks who died after the 'quake didn't die as a direct result of it. There are some people who choose to live so remotely that emergency vehicles cannot reach them. I suppose there are people who do that in every state, if the state has such "hiding places."
So, those 2 people lived in houses up in canyons above the ocean. The roads to their homes are too narrow and treacherous for ambulances to travel. Both people died of so-called "medical emergencies" - they were not hit by falling debris or landslides as a result of the earthquake (although maybe they were scared and had heart attacks, I don't know). Seems to me a helicopter could rescue people who live like that, but
I had a friend whose dad lived in a mountain home he'd built himself and the home was beautiful, but it was one of those places not able to be reached by emergency vehicles. The man had his own philosophy about his way of life (hmm...). Frankly, I was more than a little bit jumpy when we stayed there. I kept thinking What if one of us has a medical emergency, this is prettty creeepy... So, I just tried not to think about it. Last I heard, the old guy is doing fine. You can only imagine the family arguments and legal issues that result when someone chooses to live so remotely.
