Wildcatt,
Sorry to hear about the loss of your job. Now is not the time to be jobless for sure. I know in the past I had A LOT of trouble regulating my aggression, still do at times.
I'm not sure about the legal issues regarding your firing, if the ADA law might help your case (if you are from the US), etc. Maybe you can let your Union and lawyers deal with the firing issue and focus your energy and how to avoid situations like this in the future.
Since I have not legal information to share with you, I'll focus my comments on the ADHD.
As your lawyers and Union are working to get your job back, you can work on helping yourself. IMO, no matter how unjust the situation likely was, the best way you can help yourself now is to show your employer that you are doing everything possible to avoid aggressive behavior in the work place... even if deliberately provoked. I think how you individually respond to this situation will make a big difference in the case your lawyers can build and in your future employment whether at your current company or at your next job. Please do not misinterpret my statements here. I AM NOT SAYING that you are the bad guy here! I know from my own experiences that ADHD can present significant challenges for those who suffer from it. I am in no way down playing what you are dealing with. I am simply saying, aggression or violence will likely not be tolerated in the work environments. No matter who you are or what condition you may have it will likely lead only to dismissal, lack of advancement, and poor co-worker relations. You will always likely find yourself standing alone with no-one willing to step forward to cover your back. If you want to be accepted by your peers both at work and anywhere else, nows seems like a good time to take a hard look at your overall ADHD treatment plan.
You say you've been treated for ADD since 1991, what has your treatment entailed? (Meds, therapy, self-help techniques?) Are you seen regularly for this condition and by whom (family physician, pdoc???) Aside from this one experience at work, have you been struggling in other settings lately- family, marriage, recreational settings? If so, do these problems seem to be increasing, decreasing, or about the same as in the past? You don't have to answer these questions here on PC, but this might be a good place to direct your thoughts. You might trying writing your answers down on paper so you can share them with whom ever is treating your ADHD.
Maybe you have been treated since 1991, but maybe the treatment you are getting is not effective (or not longer effective) in helping you cope with your ADHD.Maybe you have some other stuff that needs personal or medical attention too. When was the last time you sat down and reviewed your ADHD treatment plan and really thought about if it helping you achieve your objectives.
Wildcatt, I know you are really angry at this point. I think you have a right to be. I hope you will see that I am just trying to help by giving you something more positive to focus. You can't do anything about the %#@&#! who provoked you. My advice here is stay a way from him and avoid any further discussion about this incident with anyone other than your lawyers and the professionals you hire to treat your ADHD. This includes getting caught up in discussions where you are continually defending yourself and your actions with other co-workers and other curious people. These people cannot help you, they won't understand, and they will only continue to feed your anger.
I hope your continue to post here on PC and get some support from fellow suffers
