Not a stupid question...

A blog is an online journal, where instead of using a pen and paper to record your thoughts,experiences, whatever ... you post 'journal entries' that you write up onto a website.

You can keep your thoughts to yourself so nobody has to see them, or you can share them in a public way (which a lot of blogs are... public).
