As far as earning money outside of retail, can you try and brainstorm other options? I have no idea about your background, but many people do things like house/pet sitting, tutoring, mystery shopping, watching an elderly person for family members that need to get out of the house for a bit.

There is a lot of information online about ways to make extra money. They may help you brainstorm. It sounds like ultimately you need to leave. You are probably not going to make a ton of money like that. But, anything you can do to set aside some money for yourself will be to your benefit, preferably in a bank account in your name.
