I think sometimes we can be so taken aback in the moment that we are stunned and don’t know what to say - of course often afterwards we think of all the things we could have said, quite often. (How about “We eat too much? You talk too much”?)

I wouldn’t read too much into your friends reaction, but good for you complaining.
