I have a dissociative disorder (derealization, very much like depersonalization) and some form of DID. I do not have schizophrenia. Depersonalization can occur in schiz. but what it truly is, is a symptom of severe anxiety. Anyone with any mental illness can have it or a person may have depersonalization as their only symptom of a mental health issue.

The belief that depersonalization is always a symptom of schizophrenia is so outdated. 30 years ago is a long time. Diagnostic criteria has changed so much since then. I have noticed so many changes.
Thanks for that good information. I had derealization real bad as a teen and in my 20's. (I felt unreal and everything around me seemed unreal.) I got over it in 1996 when I started paxil. My anxiety completely stopped.

I sometimes dissociate for several hours & I have no memory of that time period, as if someone else occupied my body during that time. I'm afraid to seek medical help right now because of covid. I stay at home most of the time. Someday I will get help.
I can't imagine losing time (but I guess I was like that for a short while when I had ECT). Hope you get some help.
