Hey willowtigger,
Do you use the Gmail app, or are you using the browser on your phone?
If it's the Gmail app:
1. Go into the Play store
2. Tap your profile pic on the top right
3. 'Manage apps and device'
Check to see whether the Gmail app needs updating.
If you're using the browser version, I'm not sure what's going on.
