On May 7, 2016, Bartolo Colon, then a pitcher for the New York Mets, hit his first (and only) home run. It is one of the greatest moments in baseball history in my opinion for a couple of reasons.

The first being that pitchers generally don't hit home runs. The way Major League Baseball is set up now, pitchers don't bat any more. Both leagues have designated hitters (which is lame).

The second reason, and by far the more significant reason for such a celebration, is Bartolo himself. He is the oldest player in Major League history to hit his first career home run at 42-years-old. His home run came in his 19th season of a 22-year career. But there's even more to the story.

This home run is iconic because Bartolo (nicknamed Big Sexy) is a big guy and does not look like your typical power hitter in today's game. He is pretty soft-spoken, mild mannered and simply loves playing the game. He is very easy to like.

Ever since then, I have declared May 7th as an official holiday in my home. My family typically goes to Detroit and get some Dominican food then we go to Belle Isle and picnic and watch the freighters go by. It is a wonderful day. Unfortunately, circumstances have changed and my family has other duties to fulfill but my wife gave me her blessing to go celebrate and she'll be there in spirit. I am going to go a baseball game today (seems appropriate enough) then make a stop along the riverside and hopefully see a freighter.

The reason I adopted this day is because something very iconic happened on this day and it has always been an inspiration and serves as a reminder that despite the odds, you, too, can do great things.

Go out and have a wonderful May 7th.
