In terms of downplaying, the best way to explain would also be under a trigger.

I get the sense from what you said that you use a different method. But I use cutting. So a way I could describe that in downplaying it would be to just say I lightly scratch my skin with my fingernails, and it just leaves a temporary mark that's gone in a few hours. Rather than talking about scratching myself harder with my fingernails or using a knife (which I haven't done in a few years). And then see how she reacts to that.
