Therapists are
paid at least to
attempt to understand, and some sort of communication is essential in that transaction. I've seen only a couple dedicated therapists, and my impression is they did try to understand and try to communicate. I did not gain much from those encounters, but I cannot fault those particular few therapists. I have heard "horror stories" about other therapists, though.
The damage a dysfunctional family of origin can do to a young one is ... significant. Add the "acute" trauma of dysfunctional therapy to the "chronic" trauma of upbringing...

mastered the "fetch" command. He would communicate he wanted something, and I would fetch it.
