I think it depends on the circumstances. If you are trying to be excused from jury duty, for example, then you definitely have to provide a letter from your psychiatrist. But my psychiatrist didn't write my exact diagnoses on the form, he just said I had a "medical illness" and was undergoing treatment and that was enough to get me excused.

Generally, it is my understanding that no one has the right to ask you for your specific diagnosis. But I could be wrong. I don't work anymore so I'm not sure at all what the rules are in the workplace regarding disclosing a medical diagnosis. But I hope there is some robust protection for the employee.
