I never heard of Frank Sinatra having a formal diagnosis of bipolar disorder. I know that people speculated that Winston Churchill had bipolar disorder, but was it really confirmed?

A few additional celebrities that confirmed formal bipolar diagnoses were Richard Dreyfuss (lead actor in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "Mr. Holland's Opus", "Jaws", "What about Bob"), Stephen Fry (a British comedian and also created an outstanding documentary series about bipolar disorder called "Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive), Margot Kidder (actress who played Lois Lane in original "Superman"), and Linda Hamilton (actress in "Terminator" movies).

The classical composer, Robert Schumann, very much likely had bipolar disorder. It was pretty much mentioned in writing, though the labels were slightly different back then. It is thought that artist Vincent Van Gogh most likely had bipolar disorder, but same issue as with Schumann. Many in the past with bipolar type 1 were often labeled as schizophrenic or sometimes as having "hysteria", the latter especially women. I also learned that many in the past with what's known as bipolar type 2 were often diagnosed with "melancholia".
