Yep I agree, it just sounds so intrusive asking for a number without a very good reason. Even when there is a good reason, I still get anxious since the receiving person still may not like being asked. Adding a number without permission just doesn't feel right, I prefer to have permission. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way, some people may see this way of thinking as weird but it's just the way it is.
