I like the idea of framing it around the exercise you get shovelling, plus you could always mention that you’d like it to go to someone who would appreciate it (maybe someone less able) and reiterate what a great bit of equipment it is (he may have wrongly read your refusal as indicating it wasn’t good enough for you or some such thing).
