The others here have already said it, but therapists are generally speaking, clinical psychologists. Psychologists only have prescription privileges in two states.

As any medical doctor can prescribe a psychiatric medication, I would suggest that you see your general practitioner if you are having a hard time making an appointment with a psychiatrist.

If indicated, they can and will prescribe a medication on the first visit.
