This is the original appropriate use of the word. I think it can appropriately be used else in mental health like "[stressor] triggered a [symptom/type of episode]" (like "lack of sleep triggered psychosis")
I have seen people on social media use it where something like "shock" or "upset" would fit better though, and I'm not sure but I think that's what cantholdmyrage was referring to.
