I had a bully, crackpot manager at my last job who wanted me gone. I was let go, but the paperwork said, "due to the needs of the business", so I would have probably just said that if asked. It's the best way for companies to just pay someone any severance owed and avoid a wrongful dismissal lawsuit. It was right around when the protests occurred in 2019, so a lot of businesses were laying people off.
Still, I was a bit nervous about being asked that. In the end my current freelance client never touched on the subject.
Not a good fit seems like a good option to me.
