I've always been told that it's the emotions of the dream that your brain is trying to process. Sometimes the content makes sense, sometimes not. But the emotions are what's important.

I've also heard it's about the emotions. And what someone or something in the dream represents to you (rather than, say, what a dream guide says a symbol represents, like if there was, say, a lion in a dream).
