Can't believe my luck. My total calories per day went down when on March 31st I doubled my Naltrexone from 25 mg at bedtime to a split dose of 50 mg, 25 mg with breakfast and 25 mg at bedtime. And the split dose does not make me depressed.
When I tried 50 mg Naltrexone in one dose while also on Zyprexa more than 5 years ago, it made me depressed and I had to stop. But not now. So happy to report that!
Naltrexone is one of the two ingredients in Contrave, an expensive brand drug used for weight loss. It is not as effective as injections, but as an add-on to injections it can work well. The other ingredient is Wellbutrin, an AD that caused insomnia when I tried it, so I had to stop. Plus, long term use has the risk of going manic. That is why I use Naltrexone alone, without Wellbutrin. But cost is also a factor: for Naltrexone, my copay is $10, but for Contrave, the pharmacy quoted an unbelievable price tag of $300. Thanks, but no thanks.
