It does get easier. Some days are bad, but it starts to fade from your mind most of the time, it fades to the background, some times its there and sometimes it isn't.
I've been "free" of it as an addiction for just over 1 year, and 4 months.
Sometimes it slips into my mind, but it doesn't stay long because you have to learn to "talk" to it, and try to figure out why you're thinking about it in the moment (like if you're stressed, or depressed). Then you try to do something positive instead.
Also, thinking about it doesn't mean you have to do the action.
Scars and marks show that you've survived a rough patch. So I think it's normal to associate some things with them, and be comforted by the fact that "you made it through".
