This is no longer true. The Neurontin case, where doctors were clearly being paid to push the drug for uses that it was not approved for (one of them being bipolar, btw) has caused very strict laws to be passed about what drug reps can do. My brother, who is a doctor, used to get football tickets from one of the drug reps. The reps are no longer allowed to give them away, because of the new laws, even though they were given whether or not my brother prescribed that company's drugs. Now, there are going to be people who violate the law, but the practice of drug companies giving gifts or money to doctors is no longer the status quo.
Just wanted to clear that up.
