I love my Strattera. I tried Concerta (methylphenidate or Ritalin) but it never seemed to work for me. I'm also a psychiatrist so I use it with some of my patients. Side effects are significant in some, about 50% of my patients can't tolerate the side effects. I have dry mouth, constipation and some sexual side effects but I think it's worth it. I can read a book, remember phone numbers and feel way more motivated. About 6 months back I increased it to 120mg a day from 80mg and boy did it really start working! I used to get angry at little things and stew for an hour, having to use all sorts of cognitive therapy techniques to calm myself down. But after the increase my anger vanished after 10 minutes. It was amazing. 120mg a day is higher than the FDA says is kosher, so many docs may not be willing to go that high. However with most new medications doctors 'in the field' figure out the real doses before someone clues in the government. Myself and some of the other ADHD docs think there may be a mild antidepressant effect too - Strattera was originally developed as an anti-depressant along with Prozac. The company denies an anti-depressant effect though. Since it is not a controlled substance I can call in prescriptions for myself (me see a shrink? - hey, I'm not crazy!). The best website I've found on ADHD is
www.additudemag.com by the way. It has very professional and reliable info. Tons of helpful articles.
