They are very frustrating. It happens to me now on average once every other day and lasts for about 30 minutes.

I have lattice corneal dystrophy due to amyloidosis. My peripheral vision already looks like a kaleidescope, so I only have my center of vision left. It drives me nuts when I get the ocular migraines because it wipes out my vision altogether.

With me, it starts with a small bright primary color neon triangle I can see when I close my eyes. When I open my eyes, that part is missing - for instance, on TV I can only see half of a person's face.

Within a minute or so, more triangles attach to the first and begin to grow in a snake-like fashion until it takes up my entire visual field. It makes me very dizzy and sick to my stomach, so all I can do is close my eyes and watch the "snake" until it slowly disappears. It really sucks when it happens to me while I'm out in public because I not only lose my vision, I lose my balance and sense of direction.

Sometimes they are accompanied by a full-blown migraine headache.

Jbug - I hope you'll be able to find the source and get some relief from your ocular migraines.
