There are actually four tonsils! The paletine (pair that are visible near uvula), the adnoids are actually a tonsil about an inch above the uvula (in an adult) and the lingual tonsil, at the base of the tongue (usually not visible, but we veiwed our own in Anatomy lab!)

Hope your daughter feels better and that removal is not necessary.
