Very often in conversation controversial topics will come up. I know that sometimes I'm the more liberal one in the group, so I patiently listen, don't say much of anything, and don't disagree or press the topic, I don't even start them. This happens mainly in business situations that I'm in, but I learn about the other person's feelings, thoughts, and attitudes without outing myself at all. Listening is very powerful tool.
