i am sure there is trouble brewing among the coffee gods. my own machine has recently passed as well.
we celebrated its wake on a new Capresso brand machine from amazon. it brews coffee and froths hot low fat milk to make fake cappucinos. this is apparently the yuppie standard bearer of todays coffee machines. too expensive and it wears out every 5 years like clock work. i am on my third capresso machine right now. but it makes a good cuppa joe.
i try to overcompensate for this excess on my part by buying my beans at costco. there are some good cheaper coffee brewers there if you are interested in a good bargain.
good luck with your oily problem. i recommend that until you get a new machine you should go to a starbucks and draw blood from the best-looking barrista you can.
