I have been in a similar situation for my entire life (and still am, although I am working hard at learning to set boundaries) and my mom isn't DID - she is an alcoholic.

I'm so sorry that your friend is feeling trapped. I was terrified to set boundaries with my mom - I literally, LITERALLY thought that the end result would be her death. My T has helped me see that that isn't so - and that if that IS what happened, she is an adult, and if that is where her choices lead her, that is her responsibility, not mine (whew! that's hard to type - but I know he is right).
