We never had uniforms in school in the early 70's. Only the local Catholic Parochial Schools wore them. We wore dresses or skirts and blouses - period. If they were too short we got sent home to re-dress.

In my private and seldom humble opinion I would have loved to have worn uniforms because I thought they were interesting - like British schools or boarding schools wore. I always was weird that way - for an American. I was always an Anglophile.

There was no way on earth I could ever look cool. In fact I remember being mocked the first time I ever drank at a party. Someone mocked me by talking about she couldn't get over seeing me drink because all she could think of was how I looked with my "pleated skirts and knee socks". I'd forgotten that. I guess I was wearing my own private uniform.....though I bought the skirts at regular clothing stores. High School is usually a painful and forgettable time that many of us couldn't wait to put behind us!!! I never did fit into any clique and I think I am proud of it because most cliques were snobbish and i don't like snobby people.

My real life began the day I exited public school! I never looked back once I graduated and 37 years later I haven't missed it for one minute.
