Buspar is usually avoided by most of the psychiatrists I know. If you want to decrease anxiety, why not start someone on an SSRI antidepressant with far more proven anti-anxiety efficacy and helps them with depression to boot? Or give them a benzo (Klonopin, Xanax or Valium) to give immediate relief from anxiety. Buspar seems most often given by primary care docs and ER docs that aren't comfortable/knowledgeable enough to give an SSRI or benzo to their patients, in my opinion. Even the manufacturer's reps at a company dinner I went to joke that it really isn't very effective (eek!). However, I have had 1 or 2 patients that have felt it worked in the past for them.
