BiscuitTin, what is most important is the desire, and then the creation of the habit of saving. The habit can be built with as little as $1 a week. As long as that $1 is put into savings the same day of each week, without fail, then the habit will develop. Once you have the saving habit (putting something away each week without thinking) you can more easily increase it. If $50 a week is not a difficult thing to do, ok, but if you selected that amount because you simply MUST put that much away, then you may very well fail at the attempt. The habit isn't there yet, and the reinforcement for the habit is missing. The benefit of saving isn't in your sights yet, truly.
Having parents upset is difficult, but it isn't like they will disown you right? Maybe you can get them to help you find a financial counselor, or a course for managing daily living regarding expenses? Good wishes!
