That's a tough question and I don't have an answer for it. However, I do know, as you do, that it takes time for meds to take effect and that at times it really takes it's toll trying to find the right ones.
As far as locating a good psychiatrist, word of mouth is what I've gone by and that doesn't help you right now. Maybe see if there are any local mental health support groups in your area - they may have some good leads.
