Carrying a torch as you say could be looked at two ways. One view, is yours, that it is unhealthy which indeed has merit. The other view is that someone is intensely loyal to the person and just doens't want to throw in the towel and give up a good thing. Relationships are tough and it should be expected that you will encounter challenges and pain. But, you just don't give up on them.

Either way you cut it I will move on with my life. But, I will not stop loving someone that I care deeply about. Just isn't going to happen.

I have rediscovered an old friend that is helping me put this in perspective for me. So I am "moving on" with my life. But, I am not a quitter and I refuse to believe that this relationship would not have been great for both of us if she would only give it a chance.
