they are generally very accurate and they are faster because of developing technology. they were first put into use in hospitals and clinics because a nurse doesn't have extra minutes to stand there and wait on a mercury thermometer.....you probably won't find a mercury thermometer in a healthcare setting now. pat p.s. i'd question the accuracy of the mercury thermometer..not the digital.
