I think in the public groups, there is a little thing at the bottom that you can click to join the group & you just make the choice yourself....yes, no.
The more private groups, you just have to ask if you would like to join, or you are asked if you would like to join the group.....either way, all social groups are there for people who have like interests or beliefs. It is an awsome place to be able to share thoughts & ideas with others thinking in a similar mind set. What a wonderful tool to give us to join us closer together. It is a beautiful thing this new site has provided us with.
