I think the chest is a great idea. When my sister and I were 12 or 13, our dad made us each a "hope chest". Then every birthday/christmas we got two items specifically for the hope chest. One was nice and non-practical, one was practical. For instance, I got a dark blue long stemmed wine glass and also a set of 4 towels. Then when we were ready to move out, we had items already. I love love love garage sales for needed items. Also, once you get moved in, you can use the chest as a coffee table!
