Clicking "Thanks" under a person's post contributes to those settings...

It means how many times YOU'VE thanked people for what they've posted, or how many times OTHERS have have thanked you for posts/replies you've made.

It's basically a lot easier than responding to posts all the time... especially if you just want to thank someone for their support, or for posting something you liked/enjoyed/or found useful.
