Thank you all for your replies. We were prepared for this, but when it happens it still hurts.

My sister and I spent most of Sunday with my dad, talking about family and old times. Dad is one who doesn't show a lot of emotion, but you know he's hurting. But he also knows that Doris is in a better place now, no more pain, no more confusion. Dad also lives in assisted living. Although he can be forgetful sometimes, there is no real diagnosis, except for age.
