Hi, Michael, welcome to PsychCentral (PC). I think everyone has a tiny anxious streak going about themselves, especially when they're younger. It takes awhile and some "practice" before we get to knowing ourselves and what we're capable of and how to get to know people and choose not based on looks and it's only natural to decide we need "work" in ways we look around and see other people do?

I don't just talk to myself, I talk BACK to myself, LOL. Get to know yourself as a friend and then defend that friend! When I say something silly to myself like that I need plastic surgery, I reply to that as if someone else were suggesting it. If a stranger walked up to you and told you you could do with a bit of plastic surgery, what would you think/say? I don't think you'd run out and get plastic surgery? Imagine that inner critic as just that, a rude "stranger". Ask him a question like, "and what would that do for me?" and see how quiet he gets, LOL. Our inner critics are usually straw characters that don't stand up to a lot of scrutiny, questions, or being laughed at. Point out errors in his thinking and he'll go "poof," out of sight.
