Don't know about B vitamin deficiency helping with "mental illnesses" but they do help stress. I don't have a mental illness (don't think) but I've taken B's for years. Years ago I had a problem with grinding my teeth in my sleep. I bought some High Stess B's and I quit. B5, believe it or not, helps swelling and pain of gout and gouty arthritis. Works like a charm, but for that, I take Hi potency B5 by itself. I have never found that information on the internet anyplace. I was told by an herbalist, but a few doctors do know it helps that. I only take the B5 as long as I need it. When you start messing with hi-potency vitamins, some can cancel out something else so you end up with a deficiency in another thing - but I've known people that have taken it for years without a problem. Some prescription drugs deplete the body of certain nutrients too.
As for checking with your doctor, I personally would ask a pharmacist. Doctors don't get very much schooling in vitamins and nutrition and some are totally against them, except for daily multiple. I worked at a hospital and it was the job of the pharmacists to keep track of possible interactions just between drugs given because some docs (even specialists) don't even know those. Pharmacists are trained to know all that.
As for testing for vitamin deficiency, there are hundreds of different blood tests that you can get to check for a specific deficiency but I suppose you have to have a doc knowledgeable enough in what deficiencies can cause what, willing to order the test, and insurance that will pay for it.
Maybe your doc could refer you to a good dietition in the hospital he's connected with. That's just an idea. I found a wonderful one at the hospital where I worked. She knew it all - foods, vitamins, and herbs and printed out over 50 pages of information.
When I read about a specific thing that helps a problem I have, I do all the research I can, like check on studies, & check with a pharmacist before I try it. Sometimes ask dr first. The doc I have now most always never objects but he has screwed up plenty on prescriptions for me. (I'm extra sensitive)
Most times, if I don't notice a difference in two weeks in a nutrient (and herbs-I take those too) within two weeks I generally quit. I'm also careful what company I order from, and rarely pay more than $20 for anything unless its Co-Q 10.
In all fairness to doctors, so many new findings are coming up all the time, I doubt they have time to keep up with everything.
