I read this when you first posted it, but since I don't have experience with the U.K. system, I wasn't sure what to say. Two years does seem like a very long time, and it seems clear that what they are doing in the program the woman is in is not working. I wonder if they would consider transferring her to another program on that basis - maybe one that will treat her more effectively and with more understanding. Some programs operate on a philosophy that they have all the power and all the knowledge, etc., and they work by taking all control away from the patient to make them submit. It sounds like that is what this program is doing. I've seen enough of that philosophy to see that even when they get immediate results, it doesn't last because the person isn't making a choice to get better, and isn't learning how to be in control of their own life. There are better ways. If control isn't working, I say try empowerment (with support).
